From Protection to Presence

A Polyvagal-Informed IFS Retreat

As therapists, we often accompany others through fear, collapse, activation, and profound vulnerability. To do so well, we are continually invited to cultivate those same qualities within ourselves: presence, regulation, and compassionate curiosity.

Beneath every protective strategy lives a nervous system doing its best to survive. When we begin to understand the language of the nervous system, our work with parts becomes gentler, deeper, and more effective. Rather than trying to move protectors aside, we learn to recognize the conditions that allow safety, connection, and Self energy to naturally emerge.

This retreat is an invitation to discover how safety creates the conditions for healing.

Held in the serene, spiritual atmosphere of Bali, this six-day experiential retreat invites you to deepen your Internal Family Systems practice through the lens of Polyvagal Theory. Together with Dr. Alexia Rothman, you'll explore how understanding the nervous system can enrich every stage of the therapeutic process, helping clients move from survival toward connection, regulation, and Self-led healing.

Surrounded by Bali's lush landscapes, warm ocean air, and the support of a community of fellow practitioners, you'll have the opportunity to slow down, reconnect with your own nervous system, and deepen the way you accompany others.

Meet Dr. Alexia Rothman

Clinical Psychologist, IFS Institute Lead Trainer, Certified IFS Therapist, and International Educator

Dr. Alexia Rothman is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia, and has devoted more than two decades to the practice, teaching, and supervision of Internal Family Systems.

She is a Certified IFS Therapist, an IFS Approved Clinical Consultant, and a Lead Trainer with the IFS Institute. Having trained extensively with Dr. Richard Schwartz, the developer of Internal Family Systems, Alexia has served on faculty for numerous Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 trainings and teaches therapists throughout the United States and internationally.

Known for her warmth, clarity, and clinical depth, Alexia helps therapists integrate the theoretical foundations of IFS with practical skills, personal experience, and compassionate presence. Her teaching creates an environment where complex clinical concepts become deeply embodied, allowing participants to develop greater confidence, attunement, and trust in both the model and themselves.

Learning Through the Nervous System

Throughout the retreat, Alexia gently weaves together Internal Family Systems and Polyvagal Theory, inviting you to experience how the wisdom of the nervous system can become an essential companion to parts work.

Across six days, you'll engage in guided meditations, experiential teaching, live demonstrations, reflective discussion, partner exercises, and skills practice designed to deepen both your clinical understanding and your embodied experience of the material.

Together, we'll explore how the nervous system continually shapes the way protectors organize around safety, connection, and survival. Rather than viewing activation, shutdown, or dysregulation as obstacles, you'll learn to recognize them as intelligent adaptations that offer valuable information about a person's internal world.

As your understanding deepens, you'll discover how supporting regulation creates the conditions for greater access to Self energy, allowing protectors and vulnerable parts to be approached with more compassion, confidence, and effectiveness.

The week gradually builds from establishing foundational safety toward working with more highly activated, blended, and survival-based states. Throughout the journey, there will be space to care for your own nervous system through guided internal experiences, quiet reflection, nourishing surroundings, and the support of a warm community of fellow practitioners.

While the retreat offers valuable clinical learning, it is first and foremost experiential in nature. By exploring these principles within your own internal system, you'll discover that your therapeutic presence naturally becomes steadier, more spacious, and more deeply attuned.

You'll return home with a richer understanding of the relationship between the nervous system and Self energy, greater confidence working with complex protective systems, and renewed trust in the healing power of presence.

Who This Retreat Is For

This retreat is designed for IFS-trained therapists, practitioners, counselors, and coaches who have completed IFS Level 1 training or hold equivalent experience.

As the retreat integrates Internal Family Systems with Polyvagal Theory through deeply experiential processes, a solid working understanding of the IFS model is essential.

If you are deeply IFS-informed through alternative pathways, you're welcome to reach out and share your background for consideration.

To support depth, safety, and a meaningful group process, participation is limited to a maximum of 30 participants.
